I'll revise and reopen in a day or two; I just wanted to confirm with the original issue because the old fix was "working" although I think this fix is more robust. Also I wrote this while very drained and exhausted in the evening and it's probably smarter to wait until I am fresh and can look it over again before pull requesting.
