A wiki page should be written that explains how the project is laid out and where to look for things.

should there be some mention of installing Newtonsoft's JSON reference? just to spell things out and be thorough

That's handled through NuGet. The project should compile out of the box on Visual Studio 2013 (grab the community edition, it's free).

But, yeah, something should be written about that as well.
