phone stuck with squigly lines running across screen #44

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.trying to root whithout updating the phones software
2.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
a rooted phone and instead its stuck on the at&t boot logo and then it has lots 
of squigly lines running across

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
its running android i think eclair 2.1

Please provide any additional information below.
its the galaxy captivate i897 and i tried unsoft bricking and it didnt help
