Assigning ratings to track sections while recording #102

1. This add-on would allow users to rate segments of the track during
recording. Basically, during recording, a user can assign a number to the
current location. This number represents a rating and will hold for a
stretch of track until another (different) rating (number) is assigned. In
interaction this could be done similar as notes and photo's, i.e. have a
"Rate" option.

2. See www.geoskating.com
This application allows skaters to rate the quality of the asphalt they are
skating. These ratings are rendered as colours on an overlay map. Using a
mobile (J2ME) application they not only record tracks but also are able to
rate the track. This is a specific application but there are more uses once
you allow rating, or more generic a tagging option. Think for instance of
surveying or scenery rating. See next.

3. A more generic variant would be to allow users to preconfigure key/value
pairs and allow these to be assigned on the fly from a menu.
OpenStreetMap for example uses a generic key/value system.

4. What would be convenient is that the ratings are also exported as XML NS
extensions in a GPX file.

5. I would be already happy if users could change colours of track segments
during recording.

We have a geoskating-mailing list on Google Groups:
http://groups.google.com/group/geoskating More and more skaters (inlcuding
me) are using Android. I'll be happy to assist in implementation issues.

Biggest hurdle to take is the copyright issue, using Google Map API means
derived
mapping data is "tainted" by Google ownership. Also see issue 66.

Sorry, but I don't understand why/how #102 could be blocked by Google TOU as in
#66.
I think I know about these issues regarding real-time GPS tracking on a Google
map
but not for simply assigning attributes/ratings to a recorded track. #102 is not
about OSM, this was just for illustration. In fact #102 could even be
implemented
without any visual tracking. I see it as a similar level as adding
notes/POIs/media
to a track. So hopefully this is a misunderstanding or I am missing something
fundamental here.

IMHO this may also be a moment to consider leaving Google Maps and start using
a true
free mapping framework and free maps. Within the (mobile) web browser this is
already
possible with OpenLayers, http://openlayers.org. For Android you could consider
