Fix: Make tests more robust. #1306

I think this conflicts with and duplicates my work in an earlier PR to fix problems from Sphinx 4.x???

Sorry for the confusion -- I copied one of your commits to try and get tests passing. I'll back that out (since this is still a draft PR).
