It's not really straightforward, because streetnames and arial photography are
on separately layers. To do that I will probably need to do image processing on
my own server. I will try to implement that.

I have a prototype working, however, it is quite unreadable, at least for my
location. It will be released once I rework the infrastructure for future
modifications (including options and disabling right from the Waze webpage!).

My server that stiches image tiles ran out of disk space; should work now.

The maps only option should be http://mt1.google.com/vt/lyrs=m@140&hl=en&x=
because it shows more detail and landmarks.
Also instead of having check box's they should be combo boxes like:
Map | Arial | Map + Arial

Also you could add a Open Street Map option:
http://b.tile.openstreetmap.org/15/29569/20109.png
is an example of their images.
As open street map is CC licences could this not get around Google's problems
if Waze is asked where the data is from? IDK just suggesting :P

Can you show me a comparison between lyrs=m@138 and m@140? I haven't been able
to find any differences, at least in my area.

The difference is the landmarks like parks, buildings have their own outlines.
I think in closer zoom's the text is clearer.
I think that 138 is made to be placed over the aerial maps so the area around
the roads is transparent which may be why it is a little harder to read when
placed over a white background.
The 140 is made to be stand alone so it is not placed over anything which is
why I like it better.
It may not be worth it but I think the more options you give, the better :P
Also have a look at the open street map thing that I wrote about, thanks for
listening to my demands, lol.

Oh and I've attached two images, of the differences :)

Fair enough, I'll use 140 in standalone street map, and will keep 138 in mixed
mode. I will also add OSM later tonight or tomorrow.
