Introduce color filled paper chart symbols for buoys and beacons #117

Closed alvarosanuy closed 7 months ago

alvarosanuy commented 1 year ago

The subWG is invited to discuss the pros and cons of updating existing S-52 Paper Chart symbology for buoys and beacons to depict color filled symbols and not just their shape.

Although this has been recently accepted for 'preferred channel' lateral marks (in order to distinguish them from standard lateral marks) [https://github.com/S-101-Portrayal-subWG/Working-Documents/issues/79], we need agreement to proceed and extend this approach to other types of navaids.

These are the 64 symbols I could provide. image Note that BCNGEN01 is not a new symbol but will change to remove the black fill from the default symbol. This is the method used for all other buoys and beacons.

Here are the S-52 lookup-tables for the color-fill of beacons. from this the logic of the Lua scripts can be created automatically. I think NWIG would be able to do that.

from this the logic of the Lua scripts can be created automatically. I think NWIG would be able to do that.

Yep, we can do that when these are incorporated into the PC.

TomRichardson6 commented 1 year ago

Overall I support this change and would like to suggest that as we already have a mariners selection for traditional and simplified symbols this could potentially be incorporated in edition 1.2.0 by extending this selection to support testing and feedback.

My general comments are that these colored symbols are more intuitive as they are more closely related to the real world features (most of the time).

They have already been implemented in some ECDIS as an option and I've not heard any negative feedback.

They would create a difference during dual fuel mode which could potentially be confusing but I think the confusion would be low.

I think their performance in night display mode needs consideration and testing to ensure they remain adequately clear in all color palettes.

I would really welcome the views of others on this.

Holger,

Is it possible that you could make an new symbol for the emergency wreck marking buoy? Use same style in design as for the safe water mark, but with just blue and yellew color instead of red and white?

Overall IALA is positive to the proposed symbols, great contribution from SevenCs.

TDYCARHugh commented 1 year ago

If you want the same shape but just different colour fills you can copy the svg file to a new name then edit the file with a txt editor and change the 'title' and 'desc' fields with the new name and description. Change the iho:Description attribute fields as needed.

Then look for white 'fCHWHT' and red 'fCHRED' fill tokens and change them to Yellow 'fCHYLW' and I am not sure which blue to use, try 'fUINFB'.

MikusRL commented 1 year ago

@GuttormTomren And when you have saved your .svg file, rightclick and set to open with browser (I prefer Chrome, but it works same in FireFox too). You will see then black patch. Add the two files below in the same folder where you have your created or downloaded files from Holger from above, and double click again on the .svg and open it in browser. The .css file is important and does the trick for colouring. The .xml file just helps you to choose the right code to write in .svg if you wish to choose different color - this file defines the colors. You can easy read with xml file readers, like XML Notepad. color files.zip Then you will see your created file in color. To make it larger on screen, use browser zoom functionality - in 100% it should look close to how it might look in ECDIS, and in 500% you can assess the details. Hope this helps too to also check if your edits were successful. And the browser tab will show the name what you have added in the .svg file between the title - title.

Here are the colour-filled version for the emergency wreck marking as created by @GuttormTomren with some minor edits from myself. The are NOT converted to the new SVG profile yet. And I am not sure if we need them all 4 since the IALA only has pillar and spire in their documentation.

I'm happy to register and map the 3 Buoy shapes in the PC (I believe there's no use case for EWM Beacon !) but, I think I will open an issue in the DCEG GitHub space to review EWM modelling. My opinion is that, for EWM, the number of attribute values available for colour, buoy shape & colour pattern should be much shorter as this feature (EWM) is very specific. If the feature does not comply with the colours and pattern for an EWM then, I believe, it would become a Buoy Special Purpose/General with category of special purpose mark = 60 (wreck mark). We may be flexible with the buoy shape (although I would recommend discontinuing, at least, values 7 (superbuoy) and 8 (ice buoy). Shapes <> than Spar and Pillar should be encoded with marks navigational – system of = 9 (no system).

Also, regarding the attribute topmark, is it worth restricting topmark/daymark shape to just 8 (upright cross)? colour could be also restricted to 6 (yellow) but it does not affect portrayal so ..... it's not critical.

Your views??

Hi all

IALA have no objections regarding the four proposed symbols. EWMB beacon-shape will most likely seldom be used, but to have it available as an option is acceptable. Thanks to Holger for the drafting of symbols.

@HolgerBothien - I noticed that all new coloured symbols have their position circle filled with DEPDW colour. This is something that was not done in S-52. Should we retain this colour? Why?

image

image

Also, I noticed you created a 'new version' of BCNGEN01 but also retained the original symbol and renamed it BCNGEN13. Can you explain how do you envisage each of then would be used (mapped to)?

image

I just want to make sure everything is right before I start registering more than 60 symbols ... :)

alvarosanuy commented 1 year ago

@HolgerBothien & @DavidGrant-NIWC - Can you please refer to my previous comment and provide advice and guidance on weather to proceed or not with the registration of symbols as supplied by Holger (with blue background)??

DavidGrant-NIWC commented 1 year ago

Recommend waiting for response - I'm not sure why the circles are filled.

Also, recommend the following changes:

HolgerBothien commented 1 year ago

Hi, the colour fill of the position circle has been used by SevenCs for many years and has been accepted by the IHO as an useful small deviation. The reason is: If the symbol is drawn above another object e.g. a contour one can see this object in the position circle and made them filled with the colour used for that object. The colour fill ensures that we always have the same fill in the position circle. Off course, this is a very small detail but will increase consistency and now is a perfect time to introduce it.

mikan66 commented 1 year ago

So, some prototyping with a tweak to Holger's files to remove "|": "BCNCAR","BCNSHP3COLOUR2,6","SY(BCNTOW22);TX(OBJNAM,2,1,3,'14106',-1,-1,CHBLK,21)","8","O","STANDARD","27020"

I am experimenting with updating our S-52 to Lua convert to the version 5 FC schema anyway. Initial results look promising here without detailed inspection at the results. image

There are some issues to resolve here such as this example: "BCNCAR","BCNSHP4","SY(BCNLTC01);TE('bn %s','OBJNAM',2,1,2,'15110',-1,-2,CHBLK,21)","8","O","STANDARD","27020"

but S-101 FC 1.1.0 does not allow BCNSHP = 4 for: S-101 feature 'BeaconCardinal' does not allow value 4 for 'BCNSHP'. S-101 feature 'BeaconIsolatedDanger' does not allow value 4 for 'BCNSHP'. S-101 feature 'BeaconLateral' does not allow value 4 for 'BCNSHP'. S-101 feature 'BeaconSafeWater' does not allow value 4 for 'BCNSHP'. S-101 feature 'BeaconSpecialPurposeGeneral' does not allow value 4 for 'BCNSHP'.

TomRichardson6 commented 11 months ago

@mikan66 the value latticed has moved from BCNSHP to NATCON in S-101 S-65 Annex B 1.1.0 12.3.1 bullet 2 refers. So BCHSHP 4 may need to be replaced with NATCON 11 for these rules. This is one of those modelling changes that has a Portrayal Impact.

Below is an initial cut based on Holger's provided files. These were only modified to pass through our DAI to Lua converter. There were many manual edits needed to the PC, hence this is currently in in a separate branch: PC#238_clor_Filled_paper_chart. There were some problems with beacons as previously noted, but the buoys seem OK, no initial errors. A sanity check by others would be appreciated before any additional integration is done into the PC baseline.

@GuttormTomren , can you indicate which rules, (above from Holger) are affected with EWMB symbol and I'll make the change.

@mikan66 - Can we please update the EWMB Rule to include the following Paper Chart mappings. They correspond to the only valid IALA shape options for EWMB:

buoyShape = 4 map to symbol BOYPIL60 (Pilar)

buoyShape = 5 map to symbol BOYSPR60 (Spar)

BOYSPR60 & BOYPIL60.zip

If buoyShape <> 4 or 5 then map to BOYGEN03

  1. EWMB, buoyShape = 5,
  2. NATCON ( natureOfConstruction)

I'll incorporate the rule changes into the main PC baseline and we'll have to defer final pictures.

These are the symbols I have talked about (from Holger): image image image Only change is the color, use same shape (as these are the safe water mark symbols).

EmergencyWreckMarks (8).docx Engineering details from Holger.

There is only need for EWMB symbols in relation to floating aids to navigation. I am not able to download S-101 cell for demo, since I am not allowed to download the exe file (IT restrictions).

Hope this helps.

This dataset only contains this case: image

@mikan66 - Based on @GuttormTomren request, please also include the following mapping in the EWMB rule:

buoyShape = 3 map to symbol BOYSPH60 (Spherical) BOYSPH60

In short, final mapping for EWMB is:

buoyShape = 3 map to symbol BOYSPH60 (Spherical)

buoyShape = 4 map to symbol BOYPIL60 (Pilar)

buoyShape = 5 map to symbol BOYSPR60 (Spar)

If buoyShape <> 3, 4 or 5 then map to BOYGEN03

@alvarosanuy , current baseline calls TOPMAR01 CSP for buoys and beacons in many places. Provided rules from Holger do not. Original pictures here also without TOPMAR01 CSP. Somewhere along the way for S-101 TOPMAR01 CSP was added in. Please confirm way forward before I merge in.

alvarosanuy commented 10 months ago

@mikan66 - S-101 Topmark requirements have not changed compared to S-52. Accordingly, TOPMAR01 CSP need to be implemented to deliver same output than S-52.

Note that, for EWMB 'Simplified' symbol, the encoded Tompmark is not to be shown (the symbol BOYNDM01 is self explanatory).

GuttormTomren commented 10 months ago

We have had an discussion at IALA regarding the EWMB symbols. The paper chart symbols are ok. But for the simplified symbols we feel that is better to use a circular symbol, with two colors inside (blue/yellow). We prefer to use the same shape and size as safewater mark/special mark/unspecified mark (red/yellow/grey symbols).

We think we should avoid using a cross shaped symbol. We have other symbols, and only the cardinal marks have any correlation with the physical topmark of a buoy.

Kind regards Guttorm (as IALA liaison)

Hi all,

See proposal from @GuttormTomren (on IALA's behalf) above, requesting a change in a decision we made in the past. The proposal is, to replace the current 'Simplified' Point symbol for EWMB (BOYNDM01 - see image below)

Proposed way forward for the proposal made in the previous comment:

Hi Alvaro, yes your interpretation is correct.

Only one miner request from us, The line seperating the blue and yellow not to be vertical, but have and angle of heel, identical to other symbols to differentiate between flixed and floating objects (ie floating spar symbol)

Kind regards Guttorm

@GuttormTomren - Not sure what you mean with this. at the moment, in S-52, there's no 'Simplified' symbol for buoys showing 2 colours. They are as follows:

Safe Water Buoy image

Isolated danger Buoy image

EWMB will always be buoys (floating) so I do not see the need to try to differentiate them from EWM beacons that are not a thing anyway; right?

I think the rule you are referring to is for 'Traditional/Paper Chart' symbols not for 'Simplified' ones. Having said this, and just looking at the images of 'Safe Water buoys' you added in a previous comment, it seems that the rule has not been consistently applied anyway (see 'spherical' buoy symbol). To be honest, there may not be a rule and the color bands may just been drawn to be parallel to the symbol outline (?). In fact, the corresponding EWMB symbol Holger created for us, matches the that symbol (vertical line to separate colours). See below: image

I recommend we produce the EWMB 'Simplified' symbol as per my draft: image
