can anyone tell me do i need external power for gsm shield sim 900? if yes then 
how much ?

Your power supply system must give up to 2A current to the SIM module! In 
addition, place a capacitor at least of 1000uF*10V (or more) near with the SIM 
module.

Thank you for the specifics.
However the shield is provided with a capacitor, so a power supply 12V 1A is 
enough.
