Metabolite ID in BiGG Database #335

I have a very simple question , I see that most of the model in BIGG database has metabolite ID for sodium as na1. How is the ID selected? Why na has 1, in its ID? and why K does not have K1?

That ID na1 goes way back, at least to the models circa 2003. Not sure why they chose it.
