I ran the variables just for canopy and I found that tlp makes the model slightly worse than not having it.
The R^2 values are better than they were when we included subcanopy, but ultimately the max value for the best model is only 0.24, so explaining 24% of the variation. Ideally we'd want an R^2 value at least >0.5 I think

Could you please try a model looking whether TLP is a good predictor of drought response for canopy trees only? I'm hoping that dropping the understory for this analysis may give us a clearer picture of how good TLP is as a predictor.
(This is just an off-topic preliminary analysis at this point, but could turn into something interesting if there's a strong response.)
