Met data #3

I'm putting this here in similar vein to Issue #2 because the climate repo (and all issues) are public.

I was looking again today at the large tablet we use for the weather data. It had 100% battery (was charging overnight), and within 15 minutes it had dropped to 30%. I had only turned it on and logged in. I'm afraid the tablet is on its way out (but it's been like that for a while now?); for the months I've been using it, it hasn't had this drastic of a battery fall.

Edit: it seems the computer said it had been charging all night when it hadn't. The battery level didn't indicate this, though.

Research I've done:

  1. The software on the tablet has an upgrade, but it requires at minimum Windows 7. The tablet runs Windows XP. A new, basic tablet that runs Windows 10 is anywhere from $100 - $500.

  2. Upgrading the software (at the "discounted" price) would be about $635, based on a quote from Campbell Scientific.

  3. Or, we can get an IP device (essentially a mini wireless router) for a quote of $407 example including shipping (I have an official quote that was emailed to me; it is valid until 9 March). From there, we use the free LoggerLink app on an Android or Apple tablet to download the weather information (this is confirmed by a Campbell Scientific employee I emailed). This would mean we don't have to get a new, full Windows 10 tablet.

  4. I had tried potentially bypassing all of this with a usb connection but unfortunately it seems this is not possible.

What do you suggest?

It sounds like #3 is probably the easiest option, right? Does the app go on a phone?

mcgregorian1 commented 5 years ago

Yep! It can work on a phone as well, as long as we have a way to then move the file from the phone to a computer (which is pretty simple).

Let me know when you decide, and I can either send you the email with the quote, or I can go ahead with starting to put that through.

Yes, please forward me the email with the quote. I'm going to close this issue.
