IDO 2: market, agricultural market, smallholder

For IDO 2 (enhanced smallholder market access) we need new terms. Here is my proposal: MARKET Envo definition: "A part of an ecosystem where people gather for the purchase and sale of provisions, livestock, and other goods". Envo considers markets as a geographical feature, which seems odd to me. The definition "part of ecosystem" is wrong, if ecosystem is taken as the OED defines it. It is ok if ecosystem is taken as envo defines it.

I also find problematic that ENVO does not refer to services, which, as well as goods, can be exchanged on a market.

In sum, I have two problems: (a) markets does not seem to be a geographic feature (at least one should consider also virtual markets) and (b) on the market one can exchange services in addition to goods.

SDGIO already has two classes called service (one OBI and one SDGIO). We could use the SDGIO one.

SDGIO does not have "goods". OLS does not have "goods" either.

Here is my proposal:

• market parent: material entity.
• market definition: a place where two or more parties can gather to facilitate the exchange of goods or services.
• market rdfs-comment: The parties involved in the market exchange of goods or services are usually buyers and sellers. The market may be physical like a retail outlet, where people meet face-to-face, or virtual like an online market, where there is no direct physical contact between buyers and sellers.
• market source: investopedia.
• goods parent: asset.
• goods definition: Something advantageous to possess or worth attaining or pursuing.
• goods source: OED.

AGRICULTURAL MARKET I propose the following definition: a market where two or more parties can gather to facilitate the exchange of agricultural goods or agricultural services.

If the main lines are ok, I will think about the definitions of agricultural goods and agricultural services.

SMALLHOLDER

• smallholder definition: a human being who owns or work a smallholding.
• smallholding definition: a farm which is small, usually supporting or worked by a single family. (sources: OED and wikipedia)
• smallholder parent: employed.
• smallholding parent: farm.

ABILITY TO ACCESS

• ability to access: SDGIO has an entry for this. However, I think it is problematic. It defines an ability as a disposition. As I see it, an ability relates an agent to an action. A disposition is a tendency or an attitude to manifest a certain behavior under given circumstances (it does not need to involve agent or actions). An ability may improve with exercise but a disposition not clearly so. It is pretty bold to say that an ability is a disposition. A more neutral definition would be better. A second problem is that SDGIO defined ability to access as a disposition of environmental systems only that physically produce something. The following may be a better definition: ability to access is a power of an agent to access something.
• Access: SDGIO has a definition of access, which, again, is problematic. It defines access as a disposition and as a quality. However, access seems to be a process. Proposed definition: to gain admission or to obtain. Parent: process.
