revision to 'sustainable development indicator' #58

Propose that sustainable development indicator be placed under IAO data item and defined as

A data item which is about a socioeconomic or environmental system and used in drawing a conclusion about the status of one or more sustainable development targets.

comment: often the output of some data transformation

pbuttigieg commented 8 years ago

In our February and May meetings in NYC, we treated indicators as things in the physical world and indicator values (SDGIO_00000003) as the data items. The latter is what i think you define above. Its current def is:

A data item which represents a sustainable development goal indicator in some quantitative or qualitative system of measurment.

Note the typo on measurement!

So perhaps the indicator itself should be a (sub)system or system part. It's probably always a BFO:material entity, so perhaps we can keep it there until we find a counterexample.

We could have some sort of logical definition: Any material entity which is the input of an observation process which has output SDG indicator value.

We could add something from OBI's domain to indicate that there's a specified list of accepted indicators and add it to the definition.

Adding this comment to this issue as my comment is related to the class 'sustainable development indicator'.

The definition of 'sustainable development indicator' is rather generic: A material entity which is composed of one or more parts of an environmental system, including its natural and anthropogenic socioeconomic components, which is thought to represent the state of the entire system.

Would it be possible to rename this class just 'indicator'? 'sustainable development indicator' could be a subclass of it if it is any different.

As this class already had the indicators as instances, we should probably sharpen the definition and create a more general class for indicator. That can live in SDGIO or a more general ontology.
