Ben, I'd like to leave this on-hold for the moment.

I have other changes to bldlvlck I'm going to check in after testing on more systems.

I now know that gcc 6.2.1 works (at least on openSUSE on a Pi, going to test on SLES 11 today). And I've changed it to respect a $CC environment variable if present.

Fair enough. I was wondering if someone wanted to do the homework to figure out which minimum GCC it requires. It's definitely higher than what bldlvlck says it is currently, though.
