From the email 24/01/2021:
You can access to it through ssh or via a remote connection as usual. Even better you can install AFS on your computer and have the space considered as a local folder. See here for instructions. Your team space is available at
/afs/inf.ed.ac.uk/group/teaching/sdpX
Where of course X is to be replaced with your group number. You will find there two folders called cgi and html that you should not delete to make sure your webspace are available. The content in the html folder can be accessed online through the address:
This is essentially somewhere to store static files, not very helpful for the backend.
The university servers that were suggested cannot be used, they are for static files only and cannot support a database. It is best to proceed with local testing only then possibly migrating to GCP or other cloud providers.
@kopi22 We need to talk about financing this for the final month so we can show it working full not just locally
Sure thing, will ask somebody about it ;)
@KyleCotton Would you prefer Cloud Computing instance (e.g. AWS/GCP/Azure) or a dedicated server?
A dedicated server would be better and cheaper for us.

Hi Kyle,
The normal process for ordering something for SDP involves us finding out if the company in question is on The University's list of approved suppliers so that I can raise a purchase order to pay for the goods or services. In this case, (having just checked) OVH aren't on the Universities system and by the time that we could possibly get them added to the system it is likely to be be too late for you to have the time needed to get things done for the last month of SDP.
I can query our system for other companies that provide the same kind of services, provided that you give me a list of potential candidates to search for. However, as far as I am aware The University does all its web stuff internally, so I am not greatly hopeful of us finding an external supplier for web services.
Kind regards, Garry
It looks like our best option is to run everything on compute engine on GCP.
There seems to be an issue with just letting us have a simple VPS.
@kopi22 Can you assist with this please?
I think it is perfectly fine to have it just run locally on our machines.
Due to the time delay in the simulation, since we don't have enough powerful computers, we will be testing locally.
Unsure what we mean by a suitable web host.
Is this just a storage bucket for static files or the server to hsot the backend?
