During the Core Vocs webinar dd. 2021-04-23, a suggestion was made to include the matronymic name property as well, alongside the existing property of patronymic name.

Additional comments to notes presented in webinar Oct 6th:

In Finland, we may have a patronymic name as a given name, like:

They come from old days, when people did not have surnames. But as said, they are now used as given names, every now and then. (Not very common nowadays, though.)

And because of equality :) we have also similar pattern to create matronymic given names:

In Iceland, they do not have surnames, but form patronymic (and sometimes matronymic) names in that manner, too:

In Finland we may have also immigrant names in our population register. Russians use patronymic names, so in order to register their names properly, we need a respective field in our register. (Like father's name Ivan –> patronymic names Ivanovich, Ivanovna)

So these matronymic and patronymic names are not essential to Finns, but as they exist, it would be fine if we all name the fields in similar manner. The field of course should be optional, not obligatory.

In Sweden a person’s surname may be formed from one of the parents' first names plus one of the endings “son” or “daughter”.

A patronymic example: • Lars Carlsson (Lars Carl’s son) • Eva Carlsdotter (Eva Carl’s daughter)

A matronymic example: • Lars Karinsson (Lars Karin’s son) • Eva Karinsdotter (Eva Karin’s daughter)

So both matronymic and patronymic names are necessary in order to be in compliance with Swedish law.
