OPUS needs to be ported to "The Cloud" (exactly what that means is TBD) starting in 2023.

"The actual transfer of our data holdings to cloud hosting would require minimal effort, but substantial effort would be required to rewrite the software underlying OPUS, Viewmaster, and our ephemeris tools to enable them to run off-site, using non-local data. We carried out a proof-of-concept project in which we hosted a version of OPUS from Amazon Web Services. Some important functions (such as data downloads) were lacking, but we gained a sense of the level of effort required. Tasks include provisioning new databases, modifying the import pipeline to operate on cloud-based data, dynamically allocating servers for load balancing, implementing new ways to serve selected download data to the user, use and auditing of appropriate private networks and firewalls for security, and implementation of new processes for development and pre-release testing."
