Players choose the proprietary game instead of our freedom-respecting alternative.

Actually, players prefer the legacy version of age of empries the conqueros over the "new HD" version in steam. The community playing at voobly.com is far bigger than steam, and the multiplayer client is years ahead compared to the basic multiplayer lobbies of the steam version. The community is bigger and more active, they managed to create patches to the original game to add support for multi-monitor, full-hd resolutions, improved AI and even a new expansion called forgotten empires (latter that expansion was lincesed and ported to the steam version). The features created by the community for the original game are far superior to the steam version.

Some usefull links: http://www.aoczone.net (community site) http://www.voobly.com (multiplayer client) http://userpatch.aiscripters.net/ (site of the userpatch 1.4 project) http://www.forgottenempires.net/ (site of the new expansion) http://aok.heavengames.com/ (AI scripters and map/mods makers community)

If you want to bring attention to this project, those are good places to start. There are many skilled devs working around this game, they could be a nice addition to the project.
