Will support for the mega (ATmega1280) be available any time soon?

Yes. See http://code.google.com/p/optiboot/

Working Mega version is already in the source repository. It works with Arduino 
18. I'm holding off until I have integrated and tested dmellis's fixes for 
Arduino 19 and 20.
