No NodeXL tab on Excel 2007 ribbon #14

I do not have a NodeXL tab on my Excel ribbon even though it says that it was properly installed.   I have opened the template per the instructions, but do not seem to have the ability to create a graph.   Do I need to uninstall and reinstall or do you have any other suggestions.

[fk@10/22/2009] Same here. I upgraded to the new version. Then the graph disappeared and "refresh graph" could not bring it up; then, when I restarted, the whole NodeXL tab was gone from the ribbon...

This is not a "low impact" issue - I can't use NodeXL!

[fk@10/22/2009] Update- NodeXL is back on the ribbon again. I had to uninstall, kill all Excel processes, and reinstall. A bit of a nuisance, but not a show stopper.

[tcap479@10/27/2009] JR:

Do you get any kind of error message when you attempt to open the NodeXL template? If so, please press Ctrl-C to copy the message, including any "Details," then paste the message here.

[JRErickson@10/27/2009] Tony, No when I open a new excel document using the NodeXL template, it loads fine, it is just that there is nothing added to the ribbon that gives me access to creating the graphs or any other functionality.

[tcap479@10/27/2009] I haven't seen this before. We've had some problems during installation, in which case an error message pops up when you run the setup program, and we've had some security and Mac-related problems when opening the template, in which case an error message also pops up, but nothing like what you're seeing.

Two questions:

  1. When you open the template, what title does Excel give to the workbook? The title appears in the shaded bar at the very top of the Excel window.

  2. There are two ways to open the NodeXL template. Have you tried them both? The first is via the Windows Start menu. On Vista, it's Start, All Programs, Microsoft NodeXL, Excel 2007 Template. The second is via Excel's New menu: Round Office Button, New, My templates, NodeXLGraph.xltx.

[JRErickson@10/27/2009] Tony,

Using the Excel New, My Templates, NodelXLGraph.xltx the window on the Excel document is NodeXLGraph1 - Microsoft Excel

Using the Windows Start Menu method it is NodelLXGraph2 - Microsoft Excel.

I hope this helps. Let me know what else I can do.

[tcap479@10/28/2009] My theory is that there is a security restriction on your machine that prevents Excel from running the NodeXL software that is embedded within the NodeXL template. These restrictions usually cause an error message to pop up explaining the problem, but there may be a setting somewhere that prevents even that from happening.

Is this your own personal computer, or is it a machine owned by your company or university?

[JRErickson@10/28/2009] It is my own computers (I have tried on both a Vista and a XP computer both running Excel 2007). My firewall software is Microsoft One Care and the only other add-ins that I have running with Excel are ExcelTab3.2 (provides tab functionality for worksheets in Excel) and the adobe PDF add-in.

[tcap479@10/28/2009] If the ExcelTab add-in is installed on both problematic machines, then I would temporarily disable it to see if that makes a difference. Go to Round Office Button, Excel Options, Add-Ins, Manage Excel Add-Ins Go, and uncheck the entry for ExcelTab.

I found minimal information on ExcelTab (and none in English), so I don't know likely it is that ExcelTab is the problem. It's worth a try, though.
