Changes to graphs not showing #226

Hi there,

I'm having an issue creating a graph the way I would like. This is a worksheet I've used before, and added some extra information. When I click refresh graph it does not update the information as per the data, this includes the inclusion of extra vertices, the colours of the vertices (even old ones) and the shapes of the vertices. I had previously created this graph and have been asked to do an updated one, but right now the only way to recreate it seems to be manually (i.e. click on each vertice/edge and change properties).

I tried to import the data into a new spreadsheet but when I click "autofill" the options to add in column details under edges does not allow for me to change things. In my original workbook I had the option to add "column one" next to edge colour. Now I only get "reciprocated?". When I click on the vertices tab in autofill it once again does not have the previous options (type, vertex) under vertex colour and label.

Please could you assist. For now I'm doing it manually but I'd really appreciate a quicker solution.

Thanks

[tcap479@8/6/2014] I'm not sure I understand the problem you're reporting. Is it that you've added more vertices to the workbook and now you want to set those vertices' colors and shapes?

If so, then in the workbook you created earlier, how did you originally set the colors and shapes of the vertices? Did you use NodeXL's Autofill Columns feature? If so, you should be able to use Autofill Columns again after you add more vertices, and that should fill in the colors and shapes of all the vertices, including the new ones.

Otherwise, please clarify what it is you're trying to do. I'm having trouble understanding "information" and "data," for example, which can mean anything.

[NadiaWilliams@8/6/2014] Hi Tony.

I added in a few edges (relationships) with the existing vertices (organisations). When I chose autofill the graph was created, but none of the additions I made were present in the graph. The graph did not include the new vertices or edges. I manually changed the colours of the edges as the automatic ones were too similar and so it was difficult to distinguish the relationships (I had the colour codes [eg. 1, 91, 220] in the column to specify the colours. I had also selected "spheres" for the shapes. When I created the graph, however, some of the edges had the colours I had chosen, while others did not (even though they had the same figures under the colour column). Half the vertices were spheres while the other half were discs and I could not get them to all match unless I manually right clicked and changed the properties of every one.

I eventually reset my computer and tried again from scratch, which allowed these changes and fixed the problem. When I went back to the original document though those changes were still not happening.

I assume that may be a buggy file?

[tcap479@8/7/2014] Thanks for the clarification, Nadia.

There are a couple of things that can cause NodeXL to ignore rows that you add to the Edges worksheet. First, are you certain that you're adding the rows immediately after the last existing row? There can't be any empty rows between the last existing row and the new row you're attempting to add.

Second, there is an Excel option for "auto table expansion", which is what is supposed to happen when you add new rows. If this feature is turned off, any new rows you add will be ignored by NodeXL. Please verify that this feature is turned on by going to Excel Options, Proofing, AutoCorrect Options, AutoFormat As You Type. The "Include new rows and columns in table" checkbox must be checked.

If neither of these helps and you can share the workbook, please do so and I'll take a look at it. You can share it by using the "Attach File" box at the bottom of the Issues tab on CodePlex.
