Closes #9.

Currently a draft; I’ll need to experiment with it a bit (and finally switch from test.pypi.org to the main PyPI server) before merging this PR.

Done; so this PR is now ready for review.

To confirm that it works, I’ve also published a first pre-release (v1.0a1) to PyPI (with binary wheels for Python 3.10–3.12 on macOS only, for now).

The README has to be updated. Otherwise it looks fine to me
