OK - I worked through the chapter once more and added a longer final exercise at the end.
My idea for the summerschool is as follows:
The participants have the conda environment with R and RStudio on their virtual machines and can start RStudio after activating it. They then should change to a directory for this session where the two datasets penguins.csv and penguin_bills.csv are waiting for them. I will guide them through creating an RStudio project in this directory and an R script to run code. They should then go to the website (so the rendered version of the .qmd file) and work through the material by copying the code and running it in their script. This gives them the necessary freedom to explore and take notes.
So that means the VMs should have the conda environment and a directory with penguins.csv and penguin_bills.csv. Is that doable? Is it compatible with your desire for homogeneity across the sessions, @jfy133? Could you adjust the SPAAM Summerschool 2024 setup section at the top of the .qmd document accordingly?
