Displays extremely spaced out in Emacs #9

Hi,

I've been longing for this to exist since I first saw a font with programming ligatures. Thank you for making it happen!

My problem is that the font displays in Emacs with enormous spacing between characters, like 1.5 or more full character widths between each character.

Fira Code works fine in Emacs (although it looks harsh and eye-strain-inducing as it always has). DejaVu Sans Code works fine in the Gnome font viewer.

I'm on Emacs 25.1.1, Ubuntu 17.04.

I did find this issue thread for Fira Code indicating that this issue has been dealt with in that project, which might be a hint.

The thread initially says this is an Emacs bug, but then at the exact comment I link below, it shows that this was something in an older version of Fira Code that was fixed by this time. The thread then diverges in to discussion of other things about ligatures specifically which were not working in Emacs, but the thing I am concerned about is the spacing on regular characters, which was apparently fixed.
