Pixelated, 2D & Minimalistic graphics #133

Closed DennisBednarz closed 8 years ago

I proposed the idea to have "close to original" UI/UX before, but people didn't seem to like it.

Here is another idea. How about having simple, 2D and minimalistic graphics? Preferably pixelated. This is obviously just an opinion, but it looks fantastic if done right. If we take an RPG Maker game for example, they have their beauties.

The best part about such direction would be the performance and battery savings, as these kind of graphics don't require much from the hardware.

What do you guys think? I can make some sprites and mockups if somebody is curious how it would look.

DMNerd commented 8 years ago

Maybe not pixelated. It certainly doesn't need to be whole 3D modeled ninatic app, But why not to use detailed and prefferably animated sprites (idea that has been here before) ?

DennisBednarz commented 8 years ago

@DeMoMan159 It is just an idea. I personally have a lot of nostalgia to these games.

But I understand that people may not like it. Here is an example (NOT MADE BY ME) of what I had in mind:

@denaxin I know exactly what you had in mind. I am just saing that it has been here before. In my opinion recreating pokemon go version of the Red and Blue or other games won't be as original as some ideas that had been here before :) I really understand the nostalgia, trust me

DennisBednarz commented 8 years ago

@DeMoMan159 Not really recreating Red and Blue.

I just love the style of pixelated graphics :)

Let's see what others think :3

DMNerd commented 8 years ago

@denaxin RIght, I see your point :)

LaurensvanVliet commented 8 years ago

NO NO NO

LaurensvanVliet commented 8 years ago

fork it if you want to

DennisBednarz commented 8 years ago

@LaurensvanVliet It is just an idea. :)

What is great about this community and @ST-Apps is that here rules democracy. If people want something, it will happen. If they don't, it won't.

LaurensvanVliet commented 8 years ago

@denaxin yeah but i was happy when i saw you talking about a clone. but it would be no fun for the other people who are willing to give it a try. they just want the app.

DennisBednarz commented 8 years ago

@LaurensvanVliet I fully agree with you. I would prefer a clone, but people here disagree. I will try to make a fork in the future that will be a 1:1 (I'm currently studying Unity so I should be capable of that in a few months)

TheJackah commented 8 years ago

I prefer the 3D style, that's what interests me. 2D/pixelation puts me off.

DennisBednarz commented 8 years ago

@TheJackah Well, that might be possible in a few months. Like I said, I am currently studying Unity.

Tourniquet88 commented 8 years ago

@denaxin You said something important "if done right". And I agree with you. If done right, it would probably look really nice. If done wrong it would look like pretty cheap.

A good example for this might be crossy road.

But it somehow still needs to be high res for devices like the Lumia 950 XL.

DennisBednarz commented 8 years ago

@Tourniquet88 2D pixelated graphics are my specialty.

If done right, everything can look good. And some things may look even better "If done right" ^^

mak3 commented 8 years ago

There is no accounting for tastes. But It's open source so every can contribute. Maybe 3 sets of assets: 2D, 2D pixelated and 3D with toogle in settings. Anyone could choose what he wants.

I think at this stage we should put all effort on stability and missing features like inventory and gyms.

PS Personally I don't like Niantic 3D style. I preffer 2D anime style but pixelated GBA style is also ok.

DennisBednarz commented 8 years ago

@mak3 2D ANIME STYLE!!! fangirl scream

ekhem..... Excuse me for that. I like your idea ;)
