Backport PR #665 to 3.0 release. WIP as a communication placeholder until I get through the tests.

Seems to work properly for me now, and passes all the rspec tests on my machine except for one involving outdated software on the admin node - which shouldn't be related to this change (particularly given that it's in a file this doesn't touch). So removing WIP tag.

@jordimassaguerpla, you also wanted tagged in this, right? :)
