Mailing list alternative #20

Closed triska closed 4 years ago

The recent migration of the mailing list to its current installation has caused one of the world's most famous and highly regarded Prolog programmers and several other valued contributors to abandon posting to the list.

See the thread for more information.

I find this loss almost unbearable and recommend looking for alternative mailing list implementations, in the hope to recover Richard O'Keefe as an invaluable contributor to the SWI community, and also others who have abruptly stopped posting after the migration. Richard is currently extremely active in the Erlang community (possibly also as a result of his abandoning the SWI mailing list), and I find his guidance and advice invaluable everywhere he posts.

Therefore, I strongly endorse the suggestion made by Kilian Evang in the thread above. In addition, I find that the current web-interface leaves much to be desired on - increasingly more common - mobile devices.

The NNTP gateway is a good step in this direction, but unfortunately does not work reliably: Some messages simply do not appear in gmane.comp.lang.swi-prolog.general on news.gmane.org, or are incorrectly marked as spam. Posting from the newsgroup again requires a Google account.

Please see the emacs-devel mailing list of GNU Emacs for an exemplary solution of all the above issues and more:

  1. works with any e-mail address
  2. a web archive is available
  3. a reliable bidirectional NNTP gateway is available
  4. scales to hundreds of postings every week
  5. no notable occurrence of spam.
