proctoring inactive #76

i try to use proctoring and have setup all the required jitsi implementation. in the seb-server gui i can see townhall and if click it directly go to the my jitsi setup. but for the student, when use the exam browser the proctoring said inactive and if i open townhall the student also not entering the townhall jitsi.

anyone can help me?

Hi, have you also set Jitsi Meet enabled within the Exam Configuration and SEB Settings for the exam you are using?

Unfortunately I have to point out, that the Jitsi Meet integration for SEB is a bit out-dated since we focused strongly on Zoom integration for the last two releases of SEB Server and SEB. If you have setup the Jitsi Meet server like described, it shall work but is still in prototype phase and we haven't tested it with new updates since version 1.3 of SEB Server.

Please let us know if it is working for you with the above settings and if not we need more information about your setup as well as the logs and log files of SEB Server and SEB. So we might find the problem.

Hi Andreas,

i have set those function enable but the proctoring using jitsi is still not available

as admin in safe exam browser server, i can see the proctoring part and open townhall button once i click it open the jitsi is open successfully and i can see the log in the jitsi as jwt authentication shows successfully

but when on the the client there is no log-in jwt authentication.

Is there any way I can see the log if the client tries to access to jitsi?

Have you also Saved/Published the used Exam Configuration after changing the Settings (Enable Jitsi Meet)? For more SEB logging you should also set the SEB log level to DEBUG on the Exam Configuration like:

The SEB Client logs can be found within your user directory (win: AppData\Local\SafeExamBrowser\Logs). Which SEB version and client OS do you use?

Hope this helps and please send us the SEB Client logs if it still not working.

Another question is, why does the exported exam configuration seem encrypted? i can't upload to Moodle seb configuration. why i say it is encrypted is because i tried to open it using Notepad and it's not working.

Hi Thanks, Andreas, i will try it and let you know. Another question is, why does the exported exam configuration seem encrypted? i can't upload to Moodle seb configuration. why i say it is encrypted is because i tried to open it using Notepad and it's not working.

Hi, Usually the Exam Configuration is not encrypted, only if you have choose to encrypt it with password or certificate. The Exam Configuration can also not be downloaded on the Exam page but only the Exam (based) Connection Configuration

This downloaded connection configuration is meant to be loaded by SEB and is not the actual Exam Configuration with all the detail settings but contains only the Settings for SEB to successfully connect to the SEB Server. This configuration us zipped and SEB can load it directly and unzip it by its own. But this is not meant to be uploaded to Moodle directly

Might I ask what your exact use-case is or what you are trying to achieve? If you want to setup a exam with SEB, SEB Server und Moodle, you either don't have to use the Deeper Integration of SEB in Moodle or you want to use Browser Exam Key to secure the quit also on Moodle side. This is currently only possible with a workaround (also read this two thread: https://github.com/SafeExamBrowser/seb-server/issues/25 https://github.com/SafeExamBrowser/seb-server/discussions/70) but will became integrated with the next version of SEB Server 1.5 and a new Moodle Plugin for SEB Server.

By the way, the proctoring on SEB client side is only been activated after the SEB Client has logged into Moodle (or the LMS) and the SEB client connection appears active in the monitoring.

I don't see in the logs that SEB Server have send the join INSTRUCTION to SEB client to instruct the client to join the meeting. This usually happens right after the student have logged into the Moodle and apply the quiz. Then the SEB connection gets to active sate on SEB Server monitoring and the SEB Server creates and send the join instruction to the client to join the collecting/proctoring room.

Yes this seems to be the problem so far. As long as SEB is not able to get the userId from Moodle login, SEB cannot finish up the handshake and the status remains in "requested" status. But the proctoring room join only gets applied when the status is active. We need first to solve this problem. Do you use special login provider for Moodle login like AAI, SSO or LDAP or something? If yes you need to add some minor script to your Moodle theme to expose the userId on login:

There will be a SEB Server integration Plugin for Moodle coming out soon to apply this issue but for now you have to either stick to Moodle with uploaded SEB Config or to SEB Server with Moodle (no SEB Config) with the only workaround to restrict the quit for SEB access only as described in the discussion: https://github.com/SafeExamBrowser/seb-server/issues/25

hi Andreas,

it seems there is a problem if i'm using a user with SSO authentication. Our learning management system uses Google oauth to authenticate users.

i have put the above code in and after doing some testing, if using a manual user account the safe exam browser will detect the session. it seems in the log, the client only tried to locate the session twice (based on the log) after that although the user had already logged in, the client stopped detecting the session so the user will have a connection requested status and the proctoring will also be available.

if I'm using a manual account. it will show the connected client and the proctoring is active.

I'm not debugging yet the proctoring video as the proctoring windows for the client shows the error "http's server IP address could not be found". will try to find the error in the log first

Do you have an idea for session collection if using Google OAuth for authentication?

I quickly looked at the code that causes this error and have seen that probably has nothing to do with the error on client side. The error happens because the code do not check if the service is Zoom before applying the Zoom specific attributes. But it just fails and go on with the usual process after. So it should not affect the function of Jitsi Meet proctoring.

The error on client side seems to happen because the client cannot connect to Jitsi Meet due to a wrong URL. So we need more info about the client error, do you see which URL or IP address the client is not able to connect to?

I quickly looked at the code that causes this error and have seen that probably has nothing to do with the error on client side. The error happens because the code do not check if the service is Zoom before applying the Zoom specific attributes. But it just fails and go on with the usual process after. So it should not affect the function of Jitsi Meet proctoring.

The error on client side seems to happen because the client cannot connect to Jitsi Meet due to a wrong URL. So we need more info about the client error, do you see which URL or IP address the client is not able to connect to?

Hi, It seems that SEB client receives the proctoring instructions from SEB Server and tries several times to connect. And right, there is no error. @dbuechel can you please have a quick look at this SEB log. SEB should be configured for JItisi Proctoring and connect to the Jitsi Service. Do we miss something here, do we have to set Jitsi on permitted processes? Thanks!

As far as I remember there is no additional setup or configuration required. And SEB seems to be receiving the usual proctoring instructions (if you search the logs for "proctoring"). There might however have been changes on the side of Jitsi Meet or alike, the Jitsi Meet proctoring implementation hasn't been tested in a long while (at least more than a year).

Is there any way i can check which url client try to connect to? As on seb server side if i click open the jitsi, it is open successfully

The SEB Server as well as the SEB client shall get the same URL for connecting to Jitsi Meet, the one that is given on the Proctoring Settings on the Exam page. So if you are able to open a proctoring/collecting room windows on SEB Server side that successfully connect to the JitsiMeet meeting, it should also work accordingly within the client . Maybe you can see more JitsiMeet logs/errors on SEB client side if you try to open the Java-Script console of the browser, since the whole proctoring connection is done within the browser as far as I know. @dbuechel Is there a way to see the Java Script console logs within the SEB client and Jitsi Meet connect?

Unfortunately not, the proctoring is running in a WebView2 control and we do not have any logging or alike for that at the moment (as the thing is still a proof of concept / prototype implementation).

Unfortunately we cannot evaluate why the SEB client is not able to join the Jtisi Meet meeting within your setup yet. Since Jitsi Meet integration is just a prototype and our main focus for proctoring integration is with Zoom, we recommend to considering join the SEB Alliance and use proctoring with Zoom, if you or your organization want to setup and scale proctoring with SEB and SEB Server properly (and also get support for that)
