Description

The goal of this ticket is to explore how we could mint DOIs for the OC challenge pages and how much engineering effort this would take.

[!TIP] Consider reusing Sage's already-existing datacite membership to create these DOIs.

Minting Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for the pages on your website can provide several key benefits, enhancing the visibility, credibility, and long-term accessibility of your content:

  1. Persistent Accessibility: DOIs provide a permanent internet link to your work. Even if the URL of the webpage changes, the DOI will always redirect to the current location of your content, ensuring that it remains accessible over time.

  2. Increased Discoverability and Citability: Content with a DOI is easier to cite and track. This can significantly increase the visibility and discoverability of your work, as DOIs are widely recognized and used in academic and professional communities. This makes your content more likely to be referenced in scholarly articles, reports, and other documents.

  3. Enhanced Credibility and Professionalism: Assigning DOIs to your pages can enhance the perceived credibility and professionalism of your content. DOIs are commonly associated with high-quality, scholarly content, which can increase trust among users and peers.

  4. Integration with Scholarly and Research Ecosystems: DOIs are integral to the research ecosystem, allowing your content to be easily integrated and linked with various databases, libraries, and citation tools. This integration can further extend the reach of your content to academic and professional audiences.

  5. Metrics and Tracking: DOIs allow for more accurate tracking of usage and citations. This data can provide valuable insights into the impact of your content, informing future content creation and strategy.

  6. Compliance with Academic Standards: For educational and research-oriented websites, minting DOIs can help in complying with the publishing standards and requirements of many academic journals and funding bodies, which often require DOIs for referenced online materials.

  7. Long-Term Archiving: By using DOIs, your content is more likely to be preserved for the long term. DOIs are often linked with archiving services that ensure content remains accessible even if the original website becomes unavailable.

In summary, minting DOIs for your website’s pages can significantly enhance the accessibility, discoverability, and credibility of your content, making it a worthwhile consideration for anyone looking to increase their content's impact and longevity.
