Latest plugin version is not using latest kodi - how to update?

The latest version of the plugin install kodi 17.4 and not 17.6 - how can I update kodi? Do I just have to add the correct ppa and upgrade it myself?

Yes, I haven't found another ppa, so it might boil down to compiling it yourself.
