[WIP] Refactoring #4

Just a PR to keep track of my refactoring progress. I'll request a review as soon as I'm finished.

Commit 27c7c7d8f9bcc275513bac1699c945ef28c760ef is a first working version. There are still a lot of TODO's and further improvements to be made.
