Project Feedback #11

In going to your sight, one issue that is worth noting (an issue that our group is also wrestling with at the moment) is the fact that your site does not launch fully in the Safari browser. Based on my understanding, I think there are some discrepancies in the manner of coding required to iron out your Safari-based page, and it is hopefully just a matter of coding more explicitly in your CSS stylesheets. Dr. Birnbaum has addressed this issue with our group as well, and it's an issue that can go entirely unnoticed depending on your browser preference, but definitely something you'll want to rectify before it's all due! Otherwise, I was fascinated by your project, the premise, and your research decisions. I leafed through a handful of your xml documents to read down some of your markup, and I loved seeing your research in action. The words you select are intentional, marked, telling, and (as you put it during the presentation) very charged. I saw some similarities in the academic aims of your project and those in ours (Immigration Station), and I think that, among them, with a corpus of text that can be so readily and cleanly juxtaposed alongside your actual analysis, it would be to your benefit to have text available on your site for users to read (I assume that you are going to do so, in the way that your site seems to be organized, but also just want to make sure). Otherwise, I think one last thing for you to think about adding is your motivations in selecting the networks you did. During the showcase, you did a phenomenal job defending your choices in selecting who you did, and it adds a layer of relevance and importance to your research question. Just as you did not select stories at random, you did not with the outlets themselves, either! All in all, I loved your project, am so excited for its direction, and can't wait to visit the site (on Safari, I hope!!!) once it's all done !!
