Cannot complete an attack action

I've just had two missions in a row throw the console window open and fail to continue when trying to issue an attack. Not sure what the cause is.

I can't do anything else now, other than quit. Any ideas?

Also I don't know how to close the console window once it's opened!

I've repeated the error, more or less. This time on failing to attack I was able to press the skip button, without getting an attack, but the next ship I had that could attack the actions didn't resolve, and on attempting to do so, the skip button disappeared.
