Saving user settings

I received a request for a preferences window to hold on to some user specific preferences.
Ideas include:

• Setting a user specified default other than 89db
• Enable/Disable automatic checking for updates

Another request was to retain the last folder opened and default to it. I thought OS X was doing this for me....
