Practical Color Theory & Design Tips for People Who Code

Type of Presentation

[x] Standard Length Talk [ ] Lightning Talk [ ] Workshop [ ] Moderated Discussion

Description

I want to share what I've learned about design and color theory, and of course, make it fun and entertaining all at the same time. This isn't a read-out of any documentation, but coming from years of digging through a bunch of amazing resources aimed at painters and updating them for people who work on the web.

Big aims & goals of the presentation

Fine Print:

This talk can be useful for both complete beginners to design and those already working as designers. The goal here is to entice designers working in Photoshop or Sketch to pick up Sass, to encourage those using Sass to get a deeper understanding and to become more intentional in using the awesome color functions, and to make developers feel confident doing design work too.

If possible, I would also like take the last 5-10 minutes to both do a Q&A and a resource-share.

Speaker Info

Front end Developer at Rooster Teeth previously Creative Development Director at the Griffin School BA Studio Art, Psychology, M.Ed Talent Development

Social Media:

I'm a classically trained fine artist who spent 6 years lecturing and teaching people how to paint, draw, and grow their creativity. Upon realizing that the Renaissance had in fact already ended, I decided to join the modern world and am now a front end developer at RealMassive. I love writing code as much as I love painting, and I want to convince the world that writing CSS is an art form. I get excited about updating and sharing old school design theory and knowledge and applying it to the infinite canvas that is the internet.

I love sharing all kinds of knowledge. I have a bachelor's in Developmental Psychology and a master's degree in Creativity and Talent Development, and do my best to weave interesting facts about how our brains work, learn, and develop into every talk.

When I'm not writing code, I paint, I do improv comedy, sing in musicals, and drink absurd amounts of coffee.

This is great, the section “I like to encourage curiosity, so here are some of the questions that will come up” really peaked my interest. Elaborating more on these points people can connect with in their own designs, then talking about execution may help draw more interest.

@scottkellum Thanks! This is all such procedural knowledge - if it isn't connected to experience or a project, it's not going to stick. My approach to teaching and speaking isn't to overwhelm people with information, but to get them to start seeing the patterns and connections and start being curious themselves. Honestly, if people walk away with more questions than they entered with, I will have done my job :)

This is a phenomenal proposal. My interest and curiosity are piqued! Really great job outlining what an attendee can expect to learn. I get the impression there's a wonderful story weaving it all together and I'm excited to see it unfold.
