Due to the deadline for this project we have to limit our scope. I believe three levels is a good amount for the first release. We could expand the game world further in future updates if we want.
Recall the basic story: Our player is a traveler from the far future, sent back into a prehistoric age with not much more than a weapon to defend themselves, and with the ultimate goal of collecting live dinosaur eggs and other trophies. The player's masters want to built a menagerie, with prized paleolithic animals to entertain the masses. Think Jurassic Park, just on a much bigger and more sinister scale.
The tone of Primal Beat is deliberately cliche, so let's stick to the good old stereotypes of games in a prehistoric setting:
Level 1: Savannah
The player encounters tall grass beneath open skies, with the occasional tree or a small stream crossing through the landscape. Predators lurk hidden in the grass or high up on the branches, but dinosaur eggs and other valuable items can also be found beneath its cover.
At the borders of the savannah, a sprawling tree line beckons...
Level 2: Jungle
Enormous trees allow only a small amount of light to reach the ground. Foliage is still dense enough to provide ample opportunities for ambushing predators. Rain is plentiful and results in a plethora of rivers and falls (a lot of that can be incorporated into the background). The player has to climb high up into the canopy to find pterosaur nests with the much sought-after eggs.
After successfully shooting and climbing their way through the rain forest, the time traveler gradually notices the trees thinning, until the fertile soil gives way to rocky ground and soot-covered crevices...
Level 3: Volcano
Here the goal could be to reach the top of the mountain, which would make this a predominantly top-scrolling level.
Streams of hot lava and crumbling rocks present a constant danger, as do the few animals thriving in this hostile environment. Some of them make their nests on the cliffs and slopes of the fire mountain and defend them vigorously against intruders.
An exhausting climb will bring the player to the very top. In the eerie glow of the magma lake sputtering in the background, they will have to best a great beast (and bring home its claws and fangs as trophies).
