Thanks for writing this up! I think this will be helpful for our group. I might suggest for the main repository that we have a separate contributing.md file that is more of a "house rules" document instead of an abridged forking workflow tutorial.

Agreed, that does sound better. Though I don't think the abridged tutorial hurts, just mostly unnecessary
