Dear Reader, You know game developers, right? A lot of people would probably hear the term and think of a bunch of nerdy computer geeks locked up in a room, typing away to produce line after line of code, and probably seldom seeing the light of day. If that description sounded accurate to you, then it’s probably safe to say that you don’t know everything about game developers. But that’s okay, because that’s what I’m here to fix. You may, like many other people, not see much reason to care for something like this, but I’ll tell you this: It’s a form of entertainment that receives a lot more criticism than other mediums for things like violence, and there’s the stereotype of it being a bunch of sexist white dudes staring at screens like we mentioned before. However, video games have a great diversity of people, roles, and components that many people ignore or don’t know about. All this business about misrepresentation matters to me because I’ve wanted to be a game developer for a very long time, and I really don’t want people making poor assumptions about me once I reach that goal. There’s more to it, though: I also hope that someone might be able to find a passion for some of the many aspects of game development, because that’s what gave me the motivation to escape my depression, and I hope that it can help someone else as well. Once this is all through, I hope that you, my beloved reader, will know more about the more artistic and professional sides of game development, and at least hold a more educated view on the topic, and in general seeing that game development is a lot more diverse than you might think, from the work that goes into it, to the styles and types. With that, I think it’s about time I let you have at it. Good luck, have fun. Gordon Mahoney
