Type area is the area of the page minus margins (and cut offs…). The current ‘content box’ mechanism is problematic since most scans contain portions of content that are supposed to be inside margins. This can be things like
page numbers
plate numbers
other headers/footers
These three may or may not be calculated to be inside the margins, depending on the project in question.
Furthermore:
(in music) staff labels and brackets/braces (the type area should begin with the actual staff lines, except on indented systems with full staff labels)
handwritten annotations which may or may not be eliminated during tailoring of the scan.
I think scantailor needs to allow for these in order for more consistent/high quality page layout and easier processing especially of sheet music. Here’s a UI concept:
Rename step no. 4 from “Select content” to “Type area”.
In this step, determine a type area box. This box will serve for calculation of page layout (type area box + margins = page box), but not remove any content outside. Then, optionally, create a content box which defaults to the type area box, but can be made larger (not smaller) in any direction. Only now, grey out any pixels outside the content box to show that they will be cut off.
Maybe it would be useful as well to have “negative fill zones”. I.e., when selecting the “Fill zones” tab in the Output stage, removed pixels are shown in grey and zones can be created where pixels will be “unremoved”. E.g. when a type area box cut off markings and artifacts from the margins, but also the page numbers, and those need to be recovered.
