The build failure is expected and due to the issue which is addressed by #24.

Address as you feel needed, then merge.

I did some stuff to .travis.yml. Wouldn't mind another look to see if this is totally crazy or just sufficiently crazy. Also interested in comments about whether this would all just be better if I used tox.

I suspect it would be better to use tox (at the very least changes would be testable locally), but then again it might be a different set of annoying hard problems to deal with. I suggest merging this and dealing with tox separately.
