Why am I suddenly so confused by DuckieTV? #240

I am confused about DuckieTV… I browsed the Facebook page and there were several instances where what I saw on the screenshots is something I never see in my DuckieTV. I’m sure there’s probably a very logical reason for this, but I’m hoping someone out there can stop my confusion.

What I saw on the Facebook screenshots was,

where it normally reads: “▼ HIDE SERIES YOUR WATCHING ▼”, it read : “▼ PULL DOWN MOST VISITED SITES ▼”, or it reads : “▼ MEEST BEZOCHITE SITES ▼”.

And where it normally reads : “▲ CLICK FOR SERIES YOU’RE WATCHING ▲”, it read : “▲ KLIK YOUR FAVORITE TV SERIES LIST ▲”.

Please I want some explanation so I can no longer feel like such a dummie.

Do you know what version you have and it might be in a different language, if you go to the About page, scroll to the bottom and post the statistics that are listed, should look something like this; http://puu.sh/bf4AE/d407c5bab1.jpg

Also, if you have topsites enabled, there will be a bar at the top that says something similar to 'Pull down for Top Sites' and at the bottom there is a 'Click for series your watching' which opens up a window and replaces the bar at the top with 'Hide Series your watching'

:-) What you are seeing are differences between the 'New Tab' mode and the 'Browser Action' mode version of DuckieTV, and also differences between some of the early language translations texts that were in place at the time the screenshots were taken.

The New Tab mode has a 'most visited sites' pull down that lives at the top of the screen, which the 'browser action' mode version does not. This gets overlaid by the 'hide series' when a user is viewing their local serie list.

Other variations on the text were due to incomplete translations into Dutch, which Schizoduckie was using when he took the some of the screenshots. No worries, aye?

Thank you for your comments Js41637 and garfield69. Garfield, your answer probably is what I was after, it's very logical. Now I wonder if you would answer this for me? What is the difference between "new tab mode" and "browser mode" in addition to what you explained to me?

Js41637 commented 9 years ago

I didn't even realise there was any real difference. The main difference is NewTab mode makes it so DuckieTV is loaded on every new tab you open as opposed to Browser Action which places a button in your app toolbar thing that you press to open DuckieTV

There are two flavours of DuckieTV for the Chrome Browser.

'New Tab' mode is a version of DuckieTV that takes over the 'New Tab' function on your Chrome browser. When your start a new tab on the browser, DuckieTV is started instead. This is the version that comes with the 'Pull Down Most Visited Sites' at the top of the main DuckieTV page, to provide some of the functionality that the 'new tab' page has. You can install it by using this link https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/duckietv-new-tab-mode/hkbamkappmgfjjahmnlngibomenmbbdf

'Browser Action' mode is the version of DuckieTV that is started by the user manually, but pressing a button that is loaded on the chrome control area next to the chrome settings button. You can install this version via this link https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/duckietv-browser-action-m/cdfkaloficjmdjbgmckaddgfcghgidei

Other than this, the two version are functionally the same (in fact there is just the one source code), with some Chrome Manifest magic to make two flavours available.

Well, now I don't feel like such a dummie. I added the NewTab mode extension, and golly, gee, that was my problem all along. When I realized none of my shows are on the calendar, I disabled it. What gives with that?

garfield69 commented 9 years ago

Each flavour of DuckieTV stores its database in a different location. That is a Chrome restriction (to prevent extensions mangling each other's data). But you can backup your data from one DuckieTV version and restore it on the other version, using the backup/import options on the DuckieTV settings page if you want to switch versions. ----- Original Message ----- From: teradactor To: SchizoDuckie/DuckieTV Cc: garfield69 Sent: Sunday, August 31, 2014 6:36 PM Subject: Re: [DuckieTV] Why am I suddenly so confused by DuckieTV? thanks garfield. I will try that. it's a big relief that someone built the backup/import options in Duckie. Thanks for sharing your expertise with me.
