The site really shines in the data-driven features such as the directory, courses, etc. I loved being able to quickly switch between departments and see how people are distributed across departments.
It would be great the home page could also have a big visual impact and draw people in with fresh news, research projects, press, etc. Given the stated goal of "making MIT cry", might be worth considering looking at, e.g., https://www.media.mit.edu/. Fresh news is highlighted and a long list of research project tiles draws people in.
