The gist: the Purelymail CalDav server doesn't seem to return calendar events that have no duration (where start time = end time) when the events are queried using REPORT calendar-query, but does so when queried using PROPFIND.
This led to a very confusing situation where my calendar events were disappearing as they were never synced back to the my android device.
