Actually there is no restriction here, it's just a test to give you a hint
about the
problem.
Currently, Chrome reads proxy settings from Gnome and KDE configuration, and
for other
desktops, it uses the system environment variables (http_proxy, ftp_proxy, ...).
And therefore, Switchy only supports Gnome and KDE desktops.
Though, you can try some workarounds to make Switchy works on Archlinux (see
this:
http://code.google.com/p/switchy/wiki/LinuxSupport).

I find this problem still exists even with version 1.6.3 on my Gentoo system.
I don't use any DE (I don't use gnome, kde or xfce4). I only use fluxbox as WM.
I use `startx' to start up X, and in my .xinitrc, there is only two lines as
following:
#!/bin/sh
fluxbox

The error message is misleading and needs to be changed. I've used Switchy!
with xfce for more than a year. But now it is failing and only tells me to use
gnome or kde.
