Revive Gettext integration

@melvinroest I made a number of changes to:

make the code use Grease for file handling as much as possible, as a prerequisite to make it work in GemStone as well (this needs to be finished further)
fix the tests that break
some style and code improvements as well as some method renames I though were useful

Almost ready to (finally!) get this merged in...
