Identify Examples of Similar Services #5

Examples of similar services -- we can look at what data they store for each project, what their search tools are like. Also look at whether they’re active, and if so, how did they manage that, vs. if they’ve faded away, why did that happen?

Volunteermatch.org, but this is intended for active projects that need workers. Our intent is to catalog completed projects (as well), so we don’t (yet) need volunteer matching.

Openhatch.org. Likewise, this is for volunteer matching, specifically on software projects.

Disaster Risk Reduction Projects, http://drrprojects.net/

PATH - Program for Appropriate Technology in Health, http://path.org -- these folks actually come up with the how-to ideas.

Instructables, http://www.instructables.com/

Hack-a-day, http://hackaday.com/

Organizations that actually do the work may have gathered their own collections of best practices and how-tos. Could contact, say UN OCHA (http://www.unocha.org/).

UN ISDR (https://www.unisdr.org/) is the UN’s disaster risk reduction agency. A message about the annual conference on the Global Disaster Risk Reduction Platform just got sent out on the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap (HOT) mailing list -- it will be in Mexico this year (https://www.unisdr.org/we/coordinate/global-platform). In addition to the global conference, there are also regional conferences (https://www.unisdr.org/partners/regional). On that page, there is this: “Through PreventionWeb, UNISDR is also providing a platform for Regional Organizations to share their information related to DRR.”

Search potential volunteer engagement. Like to get involved in it. How does this overlap with VolunteerMatch? Could we talk to someone at VolunteerMatch?

tkiehne commented 7 years ago

Idea - outsource volunteer matching (for active projects) to organizations that already do it, e.g. Volunteermatch.

We’re looking not just for “projects” but methods, techniques, how-to. How do sites that host these things organize their search?

Does the UN have training for collaboration & advocacy platform like ours?

(UNHCR, etc.?)

Pat will look at DRR Projects website architecture (from Sahana Software Foundation); maybe prepare a quick note.
