When the tests fail, it is often not obvious why from the test outputs. They need to be improved such that when an error does happen, detailed information is given.

Author: couvb Added more useful error messages for when the restart test fails, and tried to make it more clear as to what exactly the restart tests are doing. This is committed in r1822.
