This is exactly what I'm looking for! One question, though, do I really need a separate Ubuntu install to package the app? Is there no way to do it within the NAS itself?

I wouldn't try to do it within the NAS system. I've followed the western digital instructions and used a virtualbox VM with fresh installation of Ubuntu.
