for one thing there was an observation it should be possible to drop the software into some directory other than something under /opt. this is theoretically possible at the low level since multi-instance support was added. I assume at least some of the debian package install scripts need better parameters. at a minimum the c code should strictly (more strictly, likely) follow the approach of not hard-coding the /opt...
