Self control blocks my whole connection #196

Hi, thanks for your great software.

Here is the situation. I connect to internet in a library (via ethernet). To access internet, I first need to login on this page : http://www.bulac.fr/services/postes-informatiques/conditions-dutilisation/

Sometimes (but not always), after lauching selfcontrol, I am not able to connect to any website (even the one above) anymore. I looked to etc/hosts and the file is regular, blocking only the websites I asked to block.

chrome gives me this error message when trying to connect ERROR_..._ACCESS_DENIED.

Do you know what is happening? If you need more info, I will give. I will copy the hosts file.

@colasjojo Could you please try this Alpha version of SelfControl which may resolve your issue? http://downloads.selfcontrolapp.com/SelfControl_1.5.2alpha6.zip (for newer OS's only -- 10.7 or up)

Please re-open this issue if you're still having problems.

Hi,

I have downloaded the beta (Version 1.5.2a6 (1.5.2 alpha 6)) but the problem I was facing seems to still be there.

More precisely : I have to identify before being able to access internet (it is a connexion, at the library, through ethernet and with a required login/password). All was ok till I closed my laptop (without turning it off): when I came back from lunch, I was unable to connect anymore (the remaining blocking time is presently at 02h 34min).

When trying to access the login page (https://login.netinary.net/custom/lecteurs/portaildemo.php3?zone=-1) I have the error: ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT.

When trying to access directly google, I have the error: ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT.

@colasjojo Thanks for the info. Could you please try the following:

1) download/install our newest alpha version, a8: http://downloads.selfcontrolapp.com/SelfControl_1.5.2alpha8.zip

2) start a block on that network, close your laptop, and confirm that it is now blocking sites that aren't on your list.

3) If the issue is still there, download and run the new version of the SelfControl Killer: http://downloads.selfcontrolapp.com/SCKiller_1.5.2alpha.app.zip. Then email me the log file it will create in your Documents folder. My email address is charlie@charliestigler.com

OK, I will do that (don't know when, though maybe in one week). It seems that it happens only if I close the laptop for a long duration (to be confirmed). The workaround I've found is to edit the hosts file so that I can connect to the login page and thus access the network.

But, good news, when I don't have a connection at all, I work more efficiently ! ;-)

@cstigler The problem is still there. I found this way to be able to re-connect. I edit theetc/hosts file and remove the part written by selfcontrol. Then, I connect quickly to the login page and enter my login and password. It connects and then I am able to browse, except on the sites on the black list. This time, this workaround worked but I am not sure it always works.
